Now I don’t think it was intended that WordGirl’s powers matched aspects of her personality (maybe, but it was my understanding that they just based her powers off Superman) but I was thinking about it and it actually works kinda well.
Super Vocabulary– Okay it should be fairly obvious how this power reflects her personality, she loves words and she’s from planet Lexicon after all! But it’s always been my headcanon that there are various kinds of word-related superpowers on Lexicon, and someone (I can’t seem to figure out who it was, so if this was you or you know who it was please tell me so I can give them proper credit!) suggested the idea that Rhyme from Rhyme and Reason is from Lexicon too. If this is true, then clearly her word-related power is rhyming. So what makes super vocabulary a better match for Becky’s personality than rhyming or something else? Firstly, she’s not creative or artistic at all (which I feel like if she was, the rhyming ability would have made a lot of sense), instead, she is intellectual. She doesn’t care if things sound nice like if they rhyme, she cares that the things she’s saying sound correct. And thus, she has the ability to know whether or not something is a word, what it means and how to pronounce it correctly.
Super Strength– Becky is a very metaphorically strong girl. She takes all kinds of crap from being a superhero, and she seems to be strong-willed and can keep herself away from temptation. Yes, I know she has given into temptation several times (*cough* Pretty Princess *cough*) but in her defense, she’s a kid, and I think she is much stronger willed at avoiding temptation than other kids her age. She has also been shown to be a little athletic so there’s that too.
Super Speed– Metaphorically speaking, this girl is quick. She is quick to point out injustices when she sees them, quick to call people out on their BS, quick to say things she shouldn’t (all the many times she almost blew her superhero persona), quick to jump into action when she’s needed and quick-witted.
Flying– She thinks very highly of herself. She can be modest, yes, but she is also often shown to have a big ego and likes the attention she gets from citizens. Even when she’s being modest, I feel like we don’t very often see her having insecurity issues.
Super hearing– I thought this one would be hard, but it’s actually super easy and important: She is willing to listen. She listens to the villains and their problems and tries to offer them advice in return, and she is willing to listen first and fight later. This is a huge reason she’s such a great superhero and why she has such good friendships with all the villains despite them being enemies.
These next two are easy to forget she even has because they aren’t brought up or shown very often:
Sonic Scream– I know this power has been shown in a few episodes, but I have no idea which ones. Seems like it usually pops up when she’s particularly angry or upset. As for how this power relates to her personality I struggled with this one, but I thought perhaps this has to do with her wanting attention? She’s been shown in episodes like Tobey’s Playground Calamity that sometimes she likes it when Becky gets attention instead of Wordgirl. So maybe this power is based on her need for attention (because boy does it get people’s attention) and doesn’t come up very much because in general, she does get a lot of attention, it’s just usually of the Wordgirl variety. Also, it could be referring to any anger issues she may have, but represses and we don’t see it very often because she doesn’t let it through very often? That is very similar to my analysis of her last power…
Freeze Breath– I have no idea how many episodes this was in, less than the sonic scream I believe, and I think potentially only one, The Rise of Miss Power. Even if it was in more episodes, I think it’s safe to say this episode put more emphasis on this power than any other episode it may have been in, and that actually connects very well to how this power relates to her personality. It’s clear, especially in this episode that when she’s really mad or has fallen down the wrong moral path, she can be very cold-hearted. It’s kinda interesting that this power got more focus in the episode that she was at her meanest. This power doesn’t come up very often because this is not a trait we see in her very often.
Whether or not these were intentional or a fun accident I don’t know, but I thought it was interesting and I wanted to share!
