“#HOW COME PEOPLE STILL INSIST THAT THEY’RE IDENTICAL TWINS WHEN STAN’S SHOULDERS ARE TWICE AS BROAD AS FORD’S” you would think Ford having 12 fingers and a cleft chin would be enough to convince people, i don’t get the weird insistence that they’re identical. what’s wrong with fraternal twins??

idk man, this is what a different anon said:

i would think they’re identical because the two stans have (generally) the same face because that’s usually the only way to tell just by appearances but identical twins can be different heights, weights, what not. there’s lots of reasons as to why this happens but fraternal twins never look that similar in the face. i dont know i just saw your tags and it got me to thinking.

i honestly don’t know a whole lot about the genetics of twins. i’m p sure the six finger thing is just due to a birth defect but both stans have completely different builds so i always assumed they were fraternal? and the fact that their voices and faces are kinda similar but distinctly different

the only thing i was basing it off of was this pair of identical twins i knew in grade school and they looked and sounded exactly the same

I think the telling thing is how the Stans looked exactly the same up until puberty. Ford didn’t grow the cleft in his chin until his teenage years. Stan’s bulkiness is due to his eating/workout habits. So there might be a better chance of them being identical than fraternal.

Honestly, as an identical twin, I dunno what to think.  The identical faces – and yes, the prepubescent similarities – are a strong indication they’re meant to be identical, in which case I strongly appreciate their different body types, etc.  The Gravity Falls team has gone out of their way to establish Stan and Ford both visually and story-wise as individuals, which is something that the media does for us very, very rarely.

Yes, if they’re identical, their physical differences are realistic due to epigenetics and lifestyle (and can also be excused as having been played up for the sake of the audience).  The 12 fingers are more questionable, but we still don’t know for sure what caused them, so I leave that open to interpretation until we know more about it (I’d also like to point out that my twin and I both have a genetic bone deformity but to significantly different degrees, to the point that my sister’s was a noticeable problem while mine wasn’t.  In my mind there still remains the possibility that Stan in fact DOES have the same condition but it’s latent/invisible, as is my case).

HOWEVER, so far they actually strike me as fraternal.  Not because of physical differences but because of personality ones. Speaking not only as a twin but also as someone who has known, on a personal level, several pairs of both types, in my experience fraternal twins are as varied as any other set of siblings, while identicals have the same basic personality and interests but take them in different directions.  And so far, Stan and Ford have done almost nothing whatsoever to indicate they share any intrinsic commonalities at all.

Of course, we’ve only known Ford for two episodes, both of which focus on his differences with Stan, so it’s still possible they’ll turn out to be more similar than we’ve been led to believe.  Also, I’m forced to admit that even if Alex Hirsch intends for them to be identical, he’s still writing them from the perspective of a fraternal twin, as well as a showrunner who needs to make clear

that Stan and Ford are separate individuals to an audience that doesn’t always understand twins in the first place.  Perhaps identical twins as well-rounded separate characters but with realistically similar personalities is too much to expect.

So my verdict?  Unclear.  Wait until we have more info and accept that it may never be fully addressed.

If I may add my own thoughts onto this discussion. I once read that fraternal twins can look identical,  a good example is the Olsen twins

This site is where I got the picture, and it also states a few facts about them, first one being that, these young ladies are not identical.

Also, here’s a post I did a while back that’s suddenly been getting kinda popular (at least popular to me lol) for reasons i’m not sure Perhaps it could apply to Stan and Ford too/instead?

Letters of Gravity Falls #17

This is late I’m sorry

So last letter, Mabel wrote to her parents and told them about what happened in Not What He Seems and A Tale of Two Stans.

Next Letter (not really a letter) Stan and Mabel write messages on sticky notes to Ford and Dip

This letter is from Dipper and Mabel’s parents.

Oh darn! Their parents spilled coffee on the letter and it covered their names! (Okay I realize it doesn’t really look like coffee but just work with me here okay?)
