Another post for Mabel Appreciation Week day 5: Family/friend bonding (aka my favorite day because I’m a sucker for family bonding)
I wrote a fanfic with some Mabel and Ford bonding.
Quick summary: After Weirdmageddon ends, Ford and Mabel are having trouble falling asleep, they end up having a little chat that eases their guilt about starting Weirdmageddon (to be clear, I don’t think it’s either of their faults (which is basically the point of this fanfic) but I think when this is all over they will both think it’s their fault and feel guilty.)
Probably not the best summary, but I’m tired and kinda brain dead right now so oh well
Anyway, enjoy my fanfic:
“It’s over, it’s all over.”
The
thought had been echoing in Ford’s mind for hours. It was all over, and they won. He never
expected to win. He hoped that they would win, but all along he knew it was
unlikely. All they could have done was fight until the end.
Even
more impressive than winning, very few people had died. Sadly, some people did
die. And unfortunately there were a lot of people in the hospital too, but they
were all expected to live. Ford defiantly hadn’t expected that turn-out. And
probably neither did Bill and all his buddies. Ford laughed at what their
reactions must be right now to how Weirdmageddon ended.
Ford
had been pacing all night with those kinds of thoughts flying through his mind.
He knew he ought to be sleeping. Weirdmageddon had lasted several hard days,
full of battle and everyone ought to be resting and recovering from it. But
it’s hard to sleep when your mind is exploding with thoughts. At least Ford was
confident the rest of the family was asleep. Stan was so relieved that the kids
were okay, this would probably be his first good night sleep in a long time.
Ford had noticed if Dipper was kept busy all day, he’d be out like a light at
bedtime unless he had a reason to stay up. And he was certainly kept busy the
past few days. And Mabel, well she never had trouble sleeping.
“I
should go down to the basement,” Ford thought. “I should check for
remaining damaging, or invent something.” If he wasn’t going to sleep he may as
well do something productive, right? He left his room and began to walk down
the hall towards the Mystery Shack Gift Shop. As he approached the living room,
he heard the faint sound of voices on the TV. Apparently not everyone was
asleep. Or perhaps someone fell asleep watching TV. It was probably Stan, he
did that a lot. Ford turned the corner into the living room and was mildly
surprised by who he saw sitting there.
It was
Mabel. She was all curled up on the yellow armchair under a pink blanket. Her
head was resting on the arm of the chair, but she defiantly wasn’t sleeping.
“Mabel?”
Mabel
looked over at Ford. “Hi Grunkle Ford,” she said as if her watching TV in the
middle of the night was no big deal.
“Mabel
what are you doing up?” Ford asked, “It’s 3 am and we won an apocalypse
yesterday, you should be sleeping.”
“So
should you,” Mabel responded. “You couldn’t sleep either?”
“No,”
Ford said. “But I guess that isn’t too surprising considering what we’ve been
through the past few days.”
“Do you
wanna sit with me?” Mabel offered. “We can suffer in sleeplessness together!”
Mabel
scooted to the side of the chair to make room for Ford. Ford gave Mabel a
loving smile and sat next to her. Mabel then sprawled the pink blanket across
the both of them and snuggled up against her grunkle. The two sat in silence
for a while, only the buzzing of the playing TV, which they both completely
tuned out of their heads. Ford really didn’t care about what was on TV, he was
never incredibly fond of TV. Mabel was lost in thought; the same thought that had
kept her up all night so far. And now it was even worse with Ford sitting next
to her. She felt even more guilty than she already did. After a few minutes she
couldn’t take it anymore and finally said “I’m sorry I caused Weirdmageddon.”
Ford
looked down at her with confusion. “What?”
Mabel
grabbed the remote and turned off the TV. She repeated, “I’m sorry I caused
Weirdmageddon.”
Ford
was shocked, and to be honest, he was also quite frustrated with himself.
Because of his foolish actions, because of his dumb mistakes, the world almost
ended. And because of his mistakes, and the way things had happened to play
out, Mabel thought it was her fault. She was blaming herself for something that
was his fault.
“Mabel,
it isn’t your fault Weirdmageddon happened.”
“Yes,
it is!” Mabel nearly screamed but didn’t because she didn’t want to wake the
rest of the family members, “I’m the one who gave the snow-globey thing away to
Bill, Blendin, Billden? Blendill? Whatever. I’m the one who gave it away to be
broken!”
Mabel
you didn’t know, and that’s my fault.” Ford said, “I told Dipper, but I didn’t
tell you or Stan, and I told Dipper not to tell either of you. If you had known
what it was, or that is was Bill you were giving it to, would you have given it
away? Oh, and it’s called a rift…”
“No, I
defiantly wouldn’t have given it away if I knew but…it still wasn’t mine to
give away…” Mabel said.
“Were
you feeling hopeless and desperate when that happened?” Ford asked.
“Yes…”
“Then
it wasn’t your fault.” Ford said, “Bill took advantage of you when you were
feeling your worst. That’s what Bill does. He sees opportunities and he takes
them.”
They
sat in silence for a few more minutes while Mabel took that in. After a while
Ford spoke up again.
“And
anyway, it’s completely my fault, don’t blame yourself for this. It’s my fault
for not telling you, it’s my fault for even building the stupid portal in the
first place! It’s my fault for listening to Bill-“
“Grunkle
Ford, it’s not your fault,” Mabel interrupted. “You didn’t know either.”
“I know
but if I wasn’t such a fool I could have figured it out-“
“Weren’t
you feeling hopeless and desperate too?”
“Well
yes, but-“
“Then
Bill took advantage of you when you were feeling your worst too. And like you
said, that’s what he does, so it’s not your fault either.” Mabel said, “It’s
either both of our faults, or neither of our faults. Pick one.”
“I think
we’d both feel better if it was neither of our faults.” Ford replied.
“Agreed!”
Mabel sang.
There
was a long pause. Ford noticed Mabel beginning to play with her hair, sort of
nervously.
“I still
feel guilty though…” Mabel said quietly.
“Well
don’t,” Ford said, “because you know what?”
“What?”
“Bill
would’ve found a way to start Weirdmageddon one way or another. But it takes a very special, good-hearted person to end Weirdmageddon. And it wouldn’t have ended without you.” Ford told her.
After
Ford said that the biggest, sweetest smile stretched across Mabel’s face. Ford
had only ever seen Mabel with a big smile on her face, but he’d never seen her
give a smile that big before.
“Thanks
Grunkle Ford!” Mabel said, “I feel a lot better now. I think I can even go to
sleep now!”
“Good!”
Ford chuckled, “I don’t think I’ll be going to sleep anytime soon-“
“Well,
of course you’re not!” Mabel said, “You’re still wearing your clothes! Why don’t
you put on some pajamas?”
“I don’t
have pajamas. I always sleep in my clothes.”
“Oh,” Mabel
said. “Well at least do what Dipper does and take off your coat and shoes!”
Ford
smiled at her, got up, and did what he was told. He slipped off each of his
boots and set them against the chair so that if anyone walked through the
living room they wouldn’t trip on them. Then he removed his coat and laid it
over the arm of the chair. When he sat back down, Mabel took the blanket and
spread it out over her and Ford again.
“And you
should probably take these off.” Mabel said. She reached for Ford’s face and
before he even knew what she was doing, she had taken his glasses right off his
face. She set them down on the dinosaur head, then leaned down and pulled the
lever on the chair that made it recline. Then she sat back in the chair, and once
again snuggled up against her uncle.
“There!
Now we’re ready to go to sleep!” Mabel cheered softly. Ford smiled, and put his arm around his niece.
“Good
night, Grunkle Ford!” Mabel said sleepily.
“Good
night, Mabel.”
“I love
you.”
“I love
you, too.” Ford smiled.
Within
a few minutes they both had fallen asleep.
Later
when Stan woke up he saw them and took pictures, which went straight into Mabel’s
scrapbook.
