Both these men are wrong. Neither one of them is responsible for how Stanley’s life turned out. It isn’t anyone’s fault (Okay, actually we can probably argue that it was their dad’s fault for kicking Stanley out before he could finish high school and told him he wasn’t allowed to come back until he made his family a fortune but that’s a whole other thing).
First, we all know why it’s not Stanford’s fault. He never even knew how bad his brother’s life was and Stanley never contacted him so.
But it isn’t Stanley’s fault either. No one should ever just automatically assume that someone is homeless because they have ruined their own life. If Stanley was a lazy butt who didn’t do anything at all in the 10 years between when he was kicked out, and when this whole thing went down, sure it’d be his own fault. But he didn’t. He worked very hard trying to create a product that people would buy so he could make a living.

Unfortunately he’s clearly not the best salesman…
And I’m sure he avoided non-entrepreneur jobs because he’d just get stuck with a minimum wage job (especially since since he wouldn’t even have a high school diploma) and people can barely live on minimum wage jobs, let alone make a fortune which was Stanley’s entire goal

Some might argue that Stanley should have contacted Stanford, and actually ya know, spoke to him instead of hanging up before saying anything

But there are reasons why Stanley didn’t go through with the phone call.
First off, I’m sure he remembered Stanford’s reaction when their dad kicked him out.

Stanford didn’t object to kicking Stanley out, because he was still mad about Stanley ruining his chances of getting into his dream college. This was probably running through Stanley’s mind when he tried to contact Stanford and made him think “Why would Ford help me? He’s probably still furious.”
Another reason Stanley would have hung up is he would have felt ashamed. The episode made it clear that Stanford was considered the alpha twin, and that Stanley’s teachers and his dad didn’t think he could amount to anything. He’d been working his butt off trying to make a fortune, and be successful both legally and illegally and had failed. He would have felt too ashamed to ask for help after basically proving that he couldn’t amount to anything.
(Don’t get me wrong, he still should have went through with his phone call to Stanford, it would have been worth the try to see if Stanford would help him out, but I also don’t blame Stanley for hanging up)
That being said, can you imagine how much this hurt Stanley?

I can’t be the only one who thought that comment was really rude…
And then there’s this part, that really shows us how ashamed Stanley was of himself

He didn’t have to fake his own death. He could have faked Stanford’s and kept his own name. But instead he felt the need kill himself off and take the identity of his more successful twin. And just the way he looks at himself in the mirror, and they way he says “I faked a car crash to prove it!” he seems so proud, proud that as far as the world knows, Stanley Pines is dead.
And this all makes me a bit concerned about Stanley at the end of the Summer, when he is going to have to shut down the Mystery Shack and give Stanford his name back. He’s losing both the only thing that has ever made him any decent money, and the name that he wasn’t ashamed of. He has to go back to a life that he previously, no matter how hard he worked, couldn’t make a living in.
Sorry I kinda rambled, This post was originality supposed to only be about how the way Stanley’s life turned out wasn’t either twins’ fault, but then I realized how ashamed Stanley probably was and…yeah,
